Statement on Medicare’s New Alternative Payment Models

NAACOS Welcomes More Value-Based Payments Arrangements

WASHINGTON -- The National Association of Accountable Care Organizations (NAACOS) supports this week’s announcement of new, high-risk alternative payment models as additional options for ACOs to consider on their journey to value-based care. NAACOS is very pleased that they remain voluntary. The inclusion of many principles of Medicare’s existing ACO work, including accountability for cost, emphasis on patient choice and high quality of care, and focus on clinical transformation, is a testament to the success and power of accountable care. These new Medicare models elevate the role of primary care, which enables successful care transformation and the move to value, all principles NAACOS strongly supports.

NAACOS members have for years embraced changing the way health care is paid for and delivered. They recognize the health system is broken and are working to improve it. Accountable care models are a key part of the solution. As with any new Medicare program of this size and scope, there are important details to be worked out, and NAACOS stands ready to work with CMS on ironing out those details. We are eager to optimize their success to ensure our payment system continues to evolve in the right direction.
